ABOUT THE AREA
Gymno – Municipality Eretria
An ideal summer or winter destination, 37 kilometers southeast of Chalkida (Capital of Evia Island). A village with a tradition of its good meat and wine and a place of intense historical and archaeological interest.
The village of Gymno is located 37 km southeast of Chalkida, at an altitude of 120 meters, at the southeast foot of Mount Olympus and is famous for its good meat and wine.
According to some opinions village took its name due to the settlement there of the Gymnas or Gymnites, lightly armed Athenian soldiers, in 442 BC, when the Athenians occupied Eretria. Based on other opinions, the name is due to a fugitive called 'Gymnos' who hid in the forests of Mount Olympus.
Gymno is located in an area that was inhabited during prehistoric times, as evidenced by the finds in the cave of Drakospilia (Dragon’s cave), which is located just outside the village and shows life in all stages of history. In classical times, it is assumed that there was an important settlement of ancient Eretria in the area.
A small settlement of the final Neolithic period was located on the hill of Prophet Ilias to the west of the current settlement, while in the same place, there are the remains of a settlement of the classical period. Although there are many archaeological finds in the area, scholars have not yet identified it with any ancient well-known toponym. There are many monuments of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period in the wider area, mainly small churches.
The church of Agios Georgios (Saint George) is located north of the village in an olive grove at an altitude of 170 m. It is dated back to the 13th century. Scholars speculate that it was built on the foundations of an ancient temple. The temple of Zoodochos Pigi in Agia is located to the left of the road from Gymno to Setta at an altitude of 430 m above a ravine with a wonderful landscape.
It is a cross-roofed Byzantine church that in 1895 was converted into a single-aisled wooden roof. The ruins of a medieval settlement can be seen at Paleochori, while on a hill, inside the village, next to the church of the Assumption, stands a tower from the Frankish period, which was part of the chain fortification of Evia.
In the cemetery of the village are gathered many ancient architectural parts, which come from excavations in an unknown location. Around the beginning of the 19th century Gymno was uninhabited, while its settlement took place, at a rapid pace, from the middle of the same century.
On the fifteenth of August, where the patron saint of the Virgin Panagia is celebrated, a two-day trade fair is held that gathers the interest of the residents of the wider area.
It is worth visiting the cathedral of the Dormition of the Virgin, the Entrances of the Virgin, the Venetian Tower, the Byzantine church of Zoodochos Pigi (Agia) and Agios Georgios (Saint George).
