The Church of Luz de Lagos, located in the village of Luz, of medieval origin, was remodeled in 1521. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it suffered several lootings, which made it necessary to build protective walls around it. It was severely damaged during the Tsunami of 1755. Later, in 1874, its restoration was financed through contributions from residents of the region. In the twentieth century, a violent storm and earthquake of 1969 caused further damage to the church, and it was necessary to renovate it again.
Due to the existence of the beach, the locality is visited by numerous tourists, Portuguese and foreigners, the latter being mainly of British origin. The high presence of tourists and also residents of this nationality led to the opening of several bars and other tourist establishments markedly English.
